My Umbrella

Walking the city streets
The stuttering whisper
Of spirits past
Feel heavenly
In the smothering heat

Humanity and its refuse
Reach my senses
Crinkling my nose
As I continue on
My journey

The children
Used to ask me
For money
But I'm now
Part of the scenery
They no longer see
The foreigner
But a moving feature
In the landscape

"Good morning mum."
A vendor walks by
Carrying metal containers
Swinging on bamboo
Over his shoulder
What they contain
I have no clue
Steamed corn,
Roasted peanuts...
Maybe

I pass the church
I can hear the prayers
Of a hundred sinners
I wave to the security guard
Standing sentinel
Who offered me a chair
One hot day
Not too long ago

Now comes the most
Perilous part of my walk
The roundabout
Cars coming from
Every direction

On this day
My umbrella
Is my hero

Wool Gabardine

"Ah man!
It's my birthday
And I'm dancing
With a fat girl!"

Pretentious ass
Loudly whispered
Fake lousy friends
Sneered and snickered

I can't deny
That he was a
Good looking guy
Strutting around
Like a peacock

Dressed in his best
Wool gabardine
Why did he have
To be so mean?

Well, this guy just
Picked the wrong day
To have something
Nasty to say

The stricken look
On her sweet face
Made me tremble
And my blood raced

She pretended
She did not hear
I saw the drop
Salt laden tear

So I pulled out
My laser disc
Yes you heard right
My laser disc
And yes!  Blew him
To smithereens!!!

What a waste of
Finely tailored
Wool gabardine

I Laughed Myself Blind

On musical notes
I danced today
The cha-cha, salsa
And merengue

I laughed myself blind
As I twisted and turned
All thoughts flew from my mind

I extended my arm
The beat declared its charm
Sparks flew from fingertips
With the resounding boom of my hips

Round and round they went
Snake arms and fingers flit
Popped, locked and posed
My lips I continually bit

To keep my screams
From escaping
These euphoric dreams
I am dreaming

Thousands and One

I've travelled
To distant lands
Seen by thousands
And one

Met people
With great minds
And many more with none

Thoughts so deep
To drown in their words
And some so shallow
Flapping wings of a bird

For Thee

I have dabbled a decade
Gambled a nickel three
 Muddled a lifetime
Until I found thee

Sentenced to cascades
Of always fretful me
Living in pastimes
Until I met thee

Hiding in black shades
The sun I could not see
Stacked more than four dimes
And then there was thee

My yesteryears I bade
Goodbye for we are we
Challenging the paradigm
For there
Stood thee

Contented Silence

On the moor
We stood
That cold day

Two souls
Searching
For the truth
To shine our way

You pointed
To the ground
Your expression sincere
"In the bog
Faces can be found."
My heart raced in fear
Skipped an erratic beat
As I searched frantically
Near my feet

In all seriousness
You say
"Better watch your step
Or they will pull you down
And take you away."

I glanced
To my right
His profile
In my sight
Strong and sure
Eyes steady and pure

A mischievous grin
Playing above
His solid chin

I smiled
As I turned away
In contented silence
I had nothing to say

Earthbound Purgatory

I'm still here
In my earthbound purgatory
Dancing the tango
To limbo number nine

Ready to do a tap set
Of dizzying proportions
Tap, tap, tap the avarice
And I'm enduring fine

For my solo act
I pas de Boureé, trois
Before my pirouette
Into my leap to empyrean

Behold, the gardens
They are splendidly divine

Lost Key

Once upon a time
In a land faraway
Where little children
Did come out to play
There was a little girl
Who had lost her key
A very important key

You see

This key taught her
How she is supposed to be
Who she is to become
Without it she was free

And no one wanted to be free

You see

Everyone had a key
They all knew
Who they were going to be
Given to them
Before the age of three

As she grew older
She grew bolder
Bit by bit
She lost her key at five
She was lucky to still be alive
And she knew it

She hid from them all
Her parents too afraid
To make the call

To lose a daughter
And her key?
That was a huge offense
With no defense

You see

Because everyone
Must have a key
Without it
Who will you be?

The little girl knew
She just wanted to be
A soul who would always be free

She Slept

For a time she slept
After the heavens wept
No longer did the rains flow
All that was left was darkness
And the cawing of the crow

Blackest black of night
Mares like a dream in flight
And on she slept
Even knowing
That this wasn't right

Midnight tresses glowed
Raven silk laid
Upon the pillow
Lashes fluttered in fright
Lips murmured
Though held tight
For fear of saying the name
That brought on the rain
And caused so much pain

Velvety tongue encircled
The soundless blight
Sour and rancid
Scrunched her
Pixie nose
As she slept on
Bathed in moonlight

Hydras

Devil may care
But not I

I stew over
Quiet reflections
Shimmering
Scattering light
Across a sea
Of masquerades

Soft ripples
Tease the eye
A thousand mirrors
Resonate
A thousand plagues
Beneath calm
Glistening waters
Shadows hide
A tempestuous
Disorganized parade

Of worrisome hydras
Out of my depth or aid

Anon (Warning: Strong Language)

Another sleepless night
Another day without light
Send me off
Send me off
To oblivion I beseech
While the moon rides high
And the stars glitter in the sky
Anon, anon
Caresses my mind
But it was just a figment
A mirage
So it's
Another sleepless night
Another day
Without light

Fuck this shit
I sound like a whiny car
Coming out of an
Air guitar
I'll head out
To the bar
Have a couple
Of brewskis
Better than any
Sleeping pill
By far

Without a doubt
Peace
Out

Wisteria

I'm held suspended
In unknowns

Waiting...

The tick
Of the clock
Is stuck
On never ending tock

Will the boom I hear
Reverberate
In my ear?

Yes

Through the silence
A quake
That shakes
Me to the core
As I bolt for the door

Not knowing the reason

Why?
Did I fly?

With no return ticket
For a seat
In my old jalopy
Under the wisteria
Canopy

Blood rises
As the prize
Deflates in size
And I agonize
Over the unit
As a whole

You see where
My mind has gone?

Me neither

Maybe I'll just float here
Until the sharks
Come around
For another round
While I dream of hysteria
Oh, I mean wisteria

Unrestrained

My feet
Small, delicate
Oiled in lavender
Whisper softly
Across your
Bare of a back
Caressing words
Of love
Timelessly

Unrestrained

Arms held
Aloft
Sprinkled
With jasmine
At the ready
For flight
Fingers frolic
Dancing words
Of freedom
Absolutely

Unrestrained

My head
Crowned
With orchids
Thrown back
In pleasure
Hair in
Titillating
Disarray
Cooing words
Unreadable
Blissfully

Unrestrained

Morning Stroll

I took a morning stroll today
Peering happily at the stormy gray
Armed to the hilt
From the USA
But probably made in China

Favorite comfy sweater
Blarney Woolen Mills
Made in Ireland
That I inherited so long ago
In another life
From people I used to know

It has travelled
A very long way
Bought in the land
Where Leprechauns play
Put in a suitcase
To Califor-nigh-yay
Then to the Philippines
Where I'm sure it will not stay

That old girl
Still has some mileage left
She's ready and willing
To give the world
A twirl

Now if only my body
Didn't creak so loudly
As I moved it along
I'd show her
That this little gal
Is still going strong
